How To Choose Your Surgeon

The most important choice you make in the decision to have LASIK is choosing the surgeon.  Always choose a surgeon with whom you are comfortable.  You should never feel pressured or feel the need to make a rushed decision.  You should be able to ask any questions you have prior to signing up for the procedure.

The practice should have up-to-date equipment and be able to talk to you about the equipment and about the outcomes.  Don’t fall into the trap of thinking it is a laser procedure so “anyone can do it”.  Having a skilled surgeon will tailor a procedure that’s perfect for your situation and your eye.  A good surgeon will also be able to identify if you are a good candidate or a poor candidate.  Finally, an experienced surgeon will be able to quickly identify any possible complications and ensure the right treatment is recommended.

LASIK eye surgery is now exceedingly popular in the United States.  Based on its popularity, there are a number of eye surgeons performing the procedure and it has become very competitive.  Be wary of relying on slick advertising/marketing or concentrating solely on cost to select your surgeon.

At The OSU Havener Eye Institute, we believe in uniform pricing.  That means we offer one price for LASIK to all of our patients regardless of their amount of correction or of the special plan for the patient.  As we documented earlier, there are many decisions to be made regarding your procedure and it should be tailored specifically to your eye.  So whether we use the IntraLase or the microkeratome, the custom LASIK or the traditional LASIK, or choose PRK instead of LASIK, the cost will be the same to the patient.

We feel this philosophy allows us to choose the best possible procedure for you without being influenced by price.  More importantly, the patient doesn’t have to make the uncomfortable decision of how much extra you are willing to spend for the best possible results.
