Ophthalmomology Research & Clinical Trials

The Research Division spans all subspecialties of Ophthalmology, and includes not only the faculty, but also programs that involve residents, graduate students, and medical students in the scientific process.

Our faculty conduct both laboratory and clinical research. This research focuses on age related macular degeneration(AMD), corneal biomechanics in normal and pathologic eyes, diabetic macular edema (DME), retinal vein occlusion, glaucoma, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, bacterial conjunctivitis, fungal keratitis, managing ocular hypertension, and many other ophthalmic areas.

Funding sources included the National Institutes of Health/National Eye Institute, the Columbus Foundation, and the Ohio Lions Eye Research Foundation, as well as numerous industry awards.

The resident research program exposes the residents to the scientific research process by involving them with a faculty mentor in either basic science or clinical studies.  Many residents choose a project that spans all three years of their residency to allow adequate time for a fully developed project.  All residents, fellows, and medical students are encouraged to attend ARVO and present their research.

Our clinical trials are ongoing and cover many areas of ophthalmology.  Click here if you are interested in learning more or volunteering for a clinical trial.
