2008 - Managua, Nicaragua
In March 2008, physicians from the Havener Eye Institute once again traveled to Central America to provide surgical care to the impoverished area of Managua, Nicaragua. This time they brought more than their fine surgical skills, they brought ten donated corneas for tranplanting.
In an letter, a Nicaraguan nurse expressed her gratitude:
Thanks to our dear friends Dr. Tom Mauger & Dr. Rebecca Kuennen from of The Department of Ophthalmology at The Ohio State University. They did 10 cornea transplants and 4 cornea surgeries. It was a miracle!
The doctors and residents received valuable teachings as they watched the surgeries. Six children received a much needed cornea transplant. They still practice old technics. Dr. Mauger as always so ready to do all he could do.
Nicaragua is a needy nation. We are praying for an Eye Bank for this country. It was very hard to choose who would get the corneas. At the end the patients, hospital and doctors here where very grateful for it.
Tom and Becky please receive a hug full of gratitude.
